V2G: Vehicle-to-grid in New Zealand
Which EVs, chargers, and lines companies are ready for two-way charging.

V2L, V2H and V2G: what you can do today
It's early days for V2G in New Zealand, but progress is being made.
Reality check: You can't yet buy a warranty-backed V2G setup off the shelf in NZ. Two-way charging today means joining a trial with an approved car and charger.
Vehicle-to-load. Plug appliances into the car, via an interior 3-pin socket or an adaptor plugged into the exterior charge port.
See V2L-capable EVs →Vehicle-to-home. The car powers your house through a two-way charger.
Vehicle-to-grid. The car exports to the network at peak times, and you get paid for it. Needs lines company approval.
What you need for V2G
To send power from your car to your home or the grid, you need all these.
Caution: V2G is still a trial technology in New Zealand. There's some real issues around standards and risk liability. It's also unlikely that any existing EVs will gain V2G through a later update.
Which brands and vehicles cover V2H and V2G as part of their warranty.
Currently only DC chargers with CCS2 are compliant.
DC setups can be installed under AS/NZS 4777. AC V2G waits on an update to the standard.
Approved case by case, generally by the same process as solar export approval (but rules differ across the 29 networks).
Vehicles: who allows V2G in NZ?
What a car can do and what a NZ distributor will cover under warranty aren't always the same. A model can be V2G-capable overseas and still not be approved here.
| Make / model | NZ status | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
Atto 3 | Trial | Approved V2G trials only. Requires a software update by an authorised BYD service agent and BYD NZ approval per vehicle. |
Other models | In development | BYD says new models from mid-2027 are expected to be V2G capable with V2G use covered by the standard vehicle warranty. Atto 3 is approved for trials now (see model). |
All models | Trial | Approved V2G trials only. Per-vehicle approval via NordEast (NZ distributor). DC V2G only. |
EX5, Riddara RD6 | Trial | Approved V2G trials only. Per-vehicle approval via NordEast (NZ distributor). DC V2G only. |
All models | In development | V2G support for trials in development. |
All models | Trial | Approved V2G trials only. Per-vehicle approval via NordEast (NZ distributor). DC V2G only. |
EX30, EX90 | Trial | Approved V2G trials only. Per-vehicle approval via NordEast (NZ distributor). DC V2G only. |
All models | Trial | Approved V2G trials only. Per-vehicle approval via NordEast (NZ distributor). DC V2G only. |
Approval is on a case-by-case basis. Note that all trials currently operate under ISO 15118-2 (as ISO 15118-20 is not yet supported by current EVs).
V2G chargers
Currently, only DC chargers are available. Indicative pricing in Australia is around AUD$6,000 - consequently many chargers have been installed as part of subsidised trials.
Two-way AC chargers are much lower in price. However, no vehicles in NZ have an onboard AC/DC converter that officially complies AS/NZS 4777 standard. Meaning that current V2G trials are limited to DC charging.

CHAdeMO is the DC charging standard used in Nissan Leafs. Despite the protocol being set up for V2G, there are no compliant CHAdeMO V2G chargers in New Zealand.
