MG 4
The MG 4 is a fully electric hatchback that went on sale in New Zealand in April 2023. Three variants are available, the Urban Essence 54, Essence and XPower, priced from $38,990 to $55,990.
WLTP range is 405 km on the Urban Essence 54 and up to 452 km on the Essence, from batteries of 54 to 64 kWh.
Upon launch the MG 4 experienced immediate success, with high sale numbers across multiple variants. Change in overall EV policy lead to a drop in sales, before recovering in 2026.
The number of model variants was culled in 2026 (Essence 64 and X power) - both of which received mid-cycle improvements and updates.
The Urban variant was introduced in 2026 with different styling, dimensions, and powertrain.

MG 4 Essence (MY26)This updated MG 4 Essence brings changes to the powertrain including an increase in range (from 435 to 452 km), and increase in both AC and DC charge speeds.
Other changes include Instrument cluster: 7.0-inch replaced by integrated 10.25-inch unit. Infotainment: New 12.8-inch touchscreen with sat-nav, DAB+ radio, wireless CarPlay/Android Auto. Physical buttons and knobs below the screen.
Includes: Heated front seats and steering wheel, six-speaker audio, surround-view camera.

MG 4 Urban Essence 54 (2026)
MG 4 Urban Essence 54The Urban is a different vehicle compared to other MG 4 variants; it's taller, front wheel drive (instead of RWD), and is slightly more efficient (with a smaller and lighter battery).
As standard: Heat pump, battery pre-heating, heated front seats and steering wheel. Driver's electric adjusted seat.
17" starburst alloy wheels, MG Pilot including MG Pilot custom function, black and grey fabric upholstery, full LED headlights & DRL & rear lights, automatic headlamps, roof rails & rear spoiler, 7" HD driver display, 12.8" HD infotainment touchscreen, satellite navigation, wireless connection to Apple CarPlay & Android Auto.
Note that the MG spec sheet lists kerb weight as 1810 kg - however this seems incorrect (given that other countries all list 1520 kg).

In 2026, this was trim was replaced by a mid-cycle upgraded Essence 64.
